TENNIS PLAYERS
THE RETIRING AGE. DISCUSSION IN BRITAIN. PROMINENT PLAYERS’ OPINION. (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received April 1, 8.55 a.m. LONDON, March 31. The question : “Are tennis players too old at 35”? has been raised by the retirement of Gobert, a former French champion, on this ground. Prominent players disagree, declaring that there are many over 35 capable of outplaying younger men. Others say tennis is becoming too much a business instead of a game. Turnbull, the Davis Cup player, says he is 35, but he has no intention of retiring. Mr Larcomb, tho Wimbledon manager, points out that Ritchie won matches last week though ho is above 50, and Hillyard is still winning, though ho is 60. Americans usually retired at 30 because they played at a breakneck pace, and consequently were soon done. Tilden was regarded as a veteran though ho was only 33. Personally lib regarded tho retiring age for tennis to ho when a man was incapablo of walking on the courts.—A. and N.Z. cable.
