APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE. MAURETANIA RUSHING TO . SCENE. Received April 1, 11.35 a.m. NEW YORK, March 31. An S.O.S. message picked up to-day from the British freighter Laleham, about' 600 miles south-east of Halifax, said she was nearly on her beam-ends. All the lifeboats had been carried away and the water was steadily gaining in the hold. The Mauretania, 180 miles away, is rushing to the assistance of the distressed vessel, which left Newport News on March 25 for Ipswich. —A. and N.Z. cable.
