BOY SCOUTS

WEST END SCHOOL. A meeting of thoso intorestod in the formation of a committee to control tho West End Troop of Boy Scouts was held in the schoolroom last night, Mr C. H. Whitehead occupying the chair. Tho chairman in his opening remarks stated that, for two years, the movement in West End had been steadily decreasing in vigour, despite the untiring efforts of the Scoutmaster (Mr Carpenter). Tho time had now arrived to form a committee, which would hold rogular meetings and attend to tho needs of the boys. Major Bosworth (Commissioner) then addressed the meeting. Tie doprecatcd the lack of attendance, and stated that the presence of parents was essential, for it was now illegal to conduct a troop without the assistance of a governing body. Tho duty of the committee was to attend to the control of equipment and render financial aid. He saw no reason why West End should not possess a flourishing troop —they had one of the finest halls m Palmerston North for that purpose, and lie felt sure the chairman and secretary (Mr G. Lyne) would prove invaluable.

Major Sandle, District Inspector, endorsed the former speaker’s remarks, and added that it was the duty of every citizen to help tho community. Ho maintained that the training received by Boy Scouts taught them to obey instinctively and to develop all faculties, and it improved both tlimr physical and moral standard. He stated that they were fortunate in possessing such an efficient scoutmaster as Mr Carpenter. He pleaded for the support of parents, so that a good administrative committee oould be established.

After some disoussion tho following provisional committee was elected: Mesdames Thomson, Kelly, Bodoll, Whitehead, Telford and Phillips; Messrs Christie, Spilman, Whitehead, Lyne and Major Ashworth. It was stated during the evening that, on the recommendation of Bri-gadier-General Andrews, an application would be made to appoint Jack Christie (King’s Scout) to the position of assistant-Scoutmaster. It was also decided that the first meeting of the newly elected committee should be held on or about April 30.
