FARMING AND COMMERCIAL
THE WOOL MARKETS.
SALE AT WELLINGTON,
LEVIN AND CO.’S REPORT,
Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., report on the 'Wellington wool sale:—Our offering was 5320 bales. Our catalogue was good and representative. Wo showed a quantity of merinos and halfbreds from Marlborough and Nelson, some super crossbreds suitable for America, a largo proportion of topmaking wools of good average stylo and character, and a small proportion of seedy and inferior wools from back districts. Bidding was keen, spirited and general. All buyers seemed eager to obtain wool at their limits, and the sale proceeded rapidly and with vigour, clearing 94 per cent, of the catalogue under the hammer. The merino offering met with demand from Bradford and the local mills. We sold 43 bales of the well-known “Richmond Brook” clip at 23d., which is the record for New Zealand for the season. Generaly, merinos sold at id to Id. advance on last sale. Halfbreds showed an advance of Id on last sale. Wo had had several lines of good halfbreds which met with general good competition from Bradford and local mills. The “Delta” clip from Marlborough reached 19d. for 56 bales and 18id. for 26 bales, and “Porthmear” from Nelson 6 bales at 19d. and “Leefield” from Marlborough 8 bales at 17d. and “Stanley Downs” from Nelson 17d. Super crossbreds (46/48s) suitable for America were not easy to find. The top price was “Tas/Fairfield” from Feilding, 14 bales at 15d., and 8 bales “Kaiwarra” brand (bin wool) 14d. Super medium crossbreds (44/465) for America were also few. Some sales were “Tas/Fairfield” 16 bales at 14$d. “JRF/Bloomfield” 19 bales at 14Jd., “Matahiwi/JH” 15 bales at 133 d., and “Kaiwarra” 26 bales 13|d. Super 40/ 44s realised as follows: —“Matahiwi” 25 bales 13$d.; “JRF/Bloomfield” 12 bales at 13$d.; “Kaiwarra” 29 bales at 13d. These sales represent the equivalent of last sale, taking quality and condition into consideration.
For average crossbreds of all grades, prices aro not quotably higher, as buyers were evidently on the same basis as previously, but tho keenness of the bidding made the running strongly in sellers’ favour, and brought out small advances in the prices. Shabby and inferior wools sold comparatively well, both Bradford and the Continent competing strongly. Bellies and pieces sold relatively better than anything else. France, Germany, Italy and local mills all participated in tho buying. Lamb’s wool shared in tho general competition, and sold on a par with February. 1 To sum up:—Merinos were $d to Id. up; halfbreds, id to Id. up; crossbreds all on par with tendency upwards; bellies and pieces, par to sd. up; crutchings and locks, par.
