BUTCHERS’ PICNIC
ENJOYABLE DAY AT ASHHURST. An enjoyable day was spent by the many who attended the butchers’ picnic at Ashhurst yesterday. The weather remained fine, and the Domain afforded excellent shelter for luncheon parties and for those not actively participating in the sports events which were the chief feature of the afternoon. Tho little ones were given a delightful time, their entertainment including a number of sweets scrambles. In the afternoon Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., motored out to the picnic following tho meeting of tho Foxton Harbour Board, and voiced his congratulations on tho success of the annual gathering. , Tho sports events resulted as follows: 76 yards maiden race: C. Sherman 1, E. Emeny 2; married ladies’ race, Mrs Fenton 1, Mrs Oliver 2; butchers’ handicap, 75 yards, L. Crockery 1, D. O’Connell 2, E. Cooley 3; men’s 100 yards open, Cooley I, "VV. Nant 2, Sharman 3, time 10 2-osecs; single ladies’ raco, Miss Morris 1. Miss Stratton 2; 75 yards, boys’, Broderick 1, Stephens 2; butchers’ handicap, 100 yards. L. Crockery 1, E. Kneebone 2, D. O’Connell 3; visitors’ race, Oliver 1, C. O’Connell 2; master butchers’ race, 75 yards, Rennett 1, Thorne 2, time 8 1-5; 50 yards for butchers’ wives, Mrs Thorne 1, Mesdaines Kneebone and Evans 2 (tie); 75 yards for butchers over 40, Batson 1, J. Archer 2; three-legged race, Miss Norris and D. O’Connell 1, Miss Stratton and L. Crockery 2; married ladies’ race,, over 40, Mrs Benton 1, Mrs O'Donnell 2, Mrs Turner 3; final butchers’ handicap, Kneebone 1, G. Cooley 2; baby show, under six months, S. Hughey 1; baby show, over six months and under 12 months, F. Butler 1; girls’ raco, prize donated by Mr J. A.
