FEILDING NEWS
CRICKET COMPETITION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Fine weather prevailed, on Saturday for orickob enthusiasts whan the competition for tho Guthrio Shield was resumed. • On No. 1 wioket at Kowhai Park Cheltenham mot Foilding. Both teams fielded strong sides and an interesting match resulted. Cheltenham won tho toss and ejected to bat first. Daniels and E. M. Haro opened to the> bowling of Walden and Law. Before tho former batsman had opened*his account he gave a difficult chance to Law off Walden which was not accepted. It was hard luck for Law and Foilding for Daniels went on to make 46, before ho fell to ono from Carter. Daniels, who is ono of the best bats in tho district, is ovidontly coming back into form as ho scored 51 against Rangitikei on Friday, 110 only gave ono ohanco on Saturday and his score of 46 included, seven boundaries, mostly late cuts. E. M. Ilaro was smartly caught by Hill off Walden after making four. Miller put 23 together in nice stylo and was unlucky to miss a full toss from Brower which found his middlo stump. Hocking was at the wickets quite a long time for his 20 boforo ho was dismissed by Ilill, again off Walden. 11. G. Haro (12) was tho only other batsman to reach double figures and tho last wicket fell at 145. Tho work of tho Feilding team in tho field was the best display given by them this season. Vory few chances were not accepted, six of their opponents being 'caught, Hill accounting for three. The ground work was also of a highor ordor than usual. Waldon had most success with tho ball, capturing five wickets for 32. In between times Walden kept wickets and afterwards made 53 not out, quite a useful afternoon’s work. Law ono for 30, Brower two for 24, and Carter two for 26 were tho other successful bowlerß for Foilding. At 4.30 p.m. Foilding commenced their first innings and when stumps were drawn had lost threo wickets for 96. Walden and Hill as usual opened for Feilding to tho bowling of IL G. Haro and Hocking. Hill had made 16 in good stylo when ho was smartly caught by J. Sugdcn off Hocking. Waldon Boon got into his stride and was unbeaten with 53 to his credit when play ended for the day. His sooro included eight fours and ono six. The match is in a very interesting position though, with reasonable luck, Foilding should w r in. On the adjoining wicket Public Service met High School. The former batted first and wero all out for 104, not a vory big total for this toam against the High School bowling. McDonald (23) and Sauer (23) were top scorers for Public Service. McLeod (13) and Drenan (17) were tho only othor double figure scorers. High School in their first innings could do nothing against the bowling of Murdoch, six for 28, and McDonald, four for 16. Dewo (15) and Whitehead (14) only reaching double figures. In their second visit- to the wickots Public Sorvico met with disaster, Ramsay being run out without scoring and McLeod and Hoffmeister falling victims to Telford in successive balls. Drennan and McDonald then became associated and temporarily stopped the rot, tho former scoring 22 and the latter 30. When stumps wore drawn at tho conclusion of tho day’s play, Public Service had lost eight wickets for 90. There arc possibilities of an interesting finish next Saturday if High School’s batsmen can manage to put up some sort of a fight. Following aro tho detailed score in each match : CHELTENHAM v.
