BATHING SENSATION.
A SHARK AT GISBORNE. LADY’S NARROW ESCAPE. GISBORNE, Jan. 19. Bathers at tho Waikanae beach had a sensation the other morning. Bathing placidly in shoulder-deep water, a lady showed little interest in tho excited gesticulations of a number of people standing in the shallows, and appeared to be deaf to emphatic advico shrieked at her. A moment later, her placidity vanished, and with a frantic rush sho sought safety from a shark that had cruised to within a few yards of her. The shark had been seen by a resident who was awaiting tho arrival of a friend before entering tho water, and also from tho caretaker’s lodge. The warning was raised, and all thoso in the water hastened out, with tho ex-cep-ion of the lady mentioned. Tho shark was about Bft in length, but there was no opportunity to identify its type.
