BLAZE IN HONG KONG
LARGE HOTEL DESTROYED. .VERY HEAVY PAMAGE. (By Electric Telegraph.--Copyright.) Received January 2, 8.5 a.in. HONG KONG, Jan. 1. Tho biggest fire for years gutted the fine Hong Kong Hotel, which was crowded with guests, who had retired in tho small hours of tho morning after a New Year’s Eve dance. The fire started at nine o’clock in the morning. Many guests were still in bed and escaped hurriedly with such clothes as wero available.
Tho firo brigades, assisted by 250 Soldiers from the East Surrey Regiment and naval units from a British warship, made strenuous efforts to save the building, but by noon the roof had fallen and tho wliolo building was doomed.
The streets in tho vicinity were littered with hotel furniture and the guests’ belongings, considerable quantities being saved. The damage was very heavy, and at present it is impossible to estimate it. Messrs Thomas Cook and Son’s offices were also damaged. Prince Georgo was among tho naval men who wero landed. —A. and N.Z. cable.
