SPRING SHOW

ANNUAL- CARNIVAL CONCLUDES. The concluding day of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association’s spring carnival yesterday was characterised by a large attendance of the public, despite the boisterous weather, and the competitions andi the grand parade attracted huge crowds about the oval. Though large numbers were thus disposed about the centre of the spacious' grounds, the industrial halls were all the time full while late in the day it was difficult to make progress through tho sheds, such was the press of sightseers. Tho oval was in excellent condition and the competitions were conducted under the most favourable auspices. A feature of tho grand parade .was the inclusion of tho dogs, which, led by tho' Pomeranians, added a pleasingly novel touch. Mr Hugh Gillies, as in former years, carried out his duties as marshal of the parade in excellent fashion. Throughout the show has been splendidly run and in that connection a liberal meed of praise is' due to the secretary of the association, Mr W. T. Penny, his assistants in the clerical department, and to the honorary officers, headed by the president, Mr J. H. Perrett. Not a few of tho prominent visitors have expressed their cordial appreciation of the arrangements and the work of the stewards and others. Mention has previously been made in the “Standard” of the facilities afforded by tho Plunket room to mothers with babies. The Plunket room has become an institution as one little incident will demonstrate. On the second day a child lost its parents and was taken in charge of by a lady on tho grounds who enlisted the aid of a policeman, who promptly took it to tho Plunket room where the unhappy little one was cared for' until restored to its guardian. The Palmerston North Municipal Band under the conduetorship of Lieutenant George Buckley rendered an excellent musical programme yesterday, which/,was keenly appreciated by patrons of the stands. The items were as follow: March, “Kavenswood”; overture, “Tancredi”; fox-trot, “ltose of Monterey”; selection, “Tho Flying Dutchman” ; waltz, “Charming” ; humoresque, “Musical Fragments” ; cornet solo, “Silver Showers”; fox-trot, “June Nights”; souvenir, “Martial Moments”; intermezzo, “After Sunset” ; selection, “Ernani” ; descriptive selection, “The Mill in the Dale.” This year’s carnival may be counted a decided success, even though the entries in a number 'of classes were not numerically strong, for, ns was pointed out previously, there was a representative showing of stock from various quarters of tho North Island, the display in some breeds being excellent. Thanks are expressed to Mr G. C. Iveeble, the senior press steward, for the smooth operation of the machinery uffecting the press room. COMPETITIONS. Further results of the ring competitions were as follow :—- Dalrymple high jump: J. J. Waller’s (Awapuni) Biot 1, F. <Hoult’s (Fedding) Civility 2, S. G. Perry’s (Feilding) Bambler 3. 4 entries.
