THE SHANNON BRIDGE
APPORTIONMENT OF COST. LOCAL BODIES TO SHARE. A schedule showing the suggested apportionment of the cost of building a bridge over the Alanawatu river at Shannon on a new site —on the basis of the estimated expenditure being £24,ooo—was received at yesterday's meeting of the Alanawatu County Council from tho Horowlienua County Council. The writer mentioned.that the chairman of tho southern county had recently waited on the Shannon and Foxton Borough Councils with the result that the latter had agreed definitely, and the formor’s representatives subject to confirmation by the council, that each contribute one-twelfth, up to a maximum of £BSO. Should tho one-twelfth contribution from the boroughs exceed £BSO, tho Horowlienua Council was agreeable to sharing equally with the Alanawatu Council in providing the balance in excess. The writer asked that the Alanawatu Council formally agree to a fivetwelfths contribution and also, if necessary, to share in providing such amount 'as might exceed the maximum contribution from the boroughs. Of the total cost, a supporting statement of apportionment revealed that £13,666 would be borne by the Highways Board and £10,334 by the local bodies. Tho individual apportionments of tho latter amount would bo as under: Horowlienua County (5/12ths), £4306; Alanawatu County (5/12tlis), £4306; Shannon Borough (l/12th), '£B6l; Foxton Borough (l/12th), £B6l. Cr Barber formally moved, and it was seconded by Cr Penney, “that in regard to tho bridge over the Alanawatu river near Shannon, tho road thereto and protective works, this county agrees to the proposals of the controlling body (Horowlienua County Council) as to the apportionment of tho estimated cost of £24,000, as outlined above; further, that if tho amount ipaylablo .by the Foxton or Shannon boroughs should be more than £BSO, the two counties to be responsible for such surplus, and that the maintenance charges to be paid by each local body be on the scale laid down in the Schedule of responsibility.” When put to the meeting the motion was carried without discussion, the chairman (Sir Janies AVilson) merely expressing tho hope that the work would soon be undertaken.
