PORTUGUESE REVOLT

LEADER SENT TO GAOL. GOVERNMENT’S PROMPT MEASURES. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received Julv 20, 11.25 a.m. LISBON, July 19. A military revolt, headed by a number of officers, who were arrested after the outbreak of April 18, and who escaped from the fortress of San Juliae, broke out early this morning. The cruiser Vasco- de Gama declared for the revolutionaries. The Government took prompt mehsurse to suppress the revolt, the leader of which, Captain Baptista, and four other officers have already surrendered and sent to gaol. The submission of the Vasco de Gama is expected momentarily. Other revolutionaries are encamped near Belem, hut the movement is considered already suppressed. A large force of troops, as a precaution, are guarding the President’s palace.—Reuter. THE CRUISER SURRENDERS. Received Julv 20, 12.10 p.m. LISBON, July 18.
