MAGISTRATE S COURT

TO-DAY'S BUSINESS. LENGTHY LIST. Mr J. L Stout, S.M., presided over this morning’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court. Pleading guilty to a charge of having permitted a horse to trespass on the railway line at Shannon on June 15, the Makerwa Drainage Board was fined £I, with costs 7s. Failure to notify change of ownership of a motor cycle cost C. D. Wilson 10s. with costs 7s. A. H. Richards and 11. Hunter, for driving motor cars without licenses, were each mulcted in the sum of £l. with costs 7s. Charged with leaving a car stationary for more than ten minutes, other than on an appointed stand. .1. 11. McDonald was fined 10s, with cosis 7s. S. P. Powell, C. C. Franks and A. L. Wheeler, for failing to provide their cars with rear lights, were each fined 10s, with costs 7s. An absenco of all lights cost L. Pierard £l, with costs 7s. Cycling without lights cost N. Meyers and E. Barnett 10s ; each, wit-K costs 7s. C. Simmonds, for cycling on the footway, was fined 10s, with costs 7s. SPEEDING IN GORGE.

Failure to observe the speed limit of 15 miles per hour in the Manawatu Gorge cost each of the following, who either pleaded guilty or did not appear, the sum of £5, with costs £1 8s: A. Galliway, R. W. Parkinson, A. Nicholls, P. Luxford, S. Jackson, A. Fcrriss, R. Vile, S. Skinner. F. Allardicc, J. H. Aldcrton, R. A. Nimon, C. Toxward, E. 11. Green, R. L. Gray and S. Moran. FAILURE TO STOP.

Hilton Fowler, through Mr Laurenson, pleaded guilty to driving a car without lights and with failing to stop when called upon to do so by a constable. A fine of £l, with costs 7s, was imposed on each charge. ARMS ACT PROSECUTION.

Phillip Eustace Cross, of Shannon, was charged with failure to produce on demand by a constable certificates of registration for a shotgun, revolver and pea-riile with which he had been issued. Defendant pleaded guilty and was fined £2, with costs 7s CHARGE AGAINST MILKMAN.

Henry J. Wood, of Rangitikei line, was charged with selling milk wnich showed on analysis 10 per cent of added water. Air Laurenson, in entering a plea ot guilty on behalf of defendant, saui that the watering had been entirely an accident, due to an overtiou' from a cooler. Only three gallons of watered milk had been sold. This was the first time that defendant nad been before die Court on a charge of this nature.

Inc Magistrate imposed a tine of £2, with costs 10s.

EMPLOYMENT OF FEMALE LABOUR. E. Bleascl, restaurant keeper, was charged with employing- two female assistants alter The hour ot 10.30 p.m. Detendant pleaded guilty, and was fined £2, with cos.s 7s, on each charge. S. K. Murray, another restaurant keeper, for whom Mr Laurenson appeared, was charged similarly with respect to one female and, pleadipg guilty, was fined the same amount. FAILURE TO CLOSE SHOP. A. L. Westmoreland, bookseller, was charged that, on June 27, lie did fail to close his shop at the hour of 8.30 p.m., as required by the Shops and Offices Act. In a letter, defendant stated that his shop liad been open only for the purpose of bringing in outside goods. Tile Magistrate imposed a fine of £2, with costs 7s. BREACH OF BUILDING BY-LAWS. Henry Meredith Garner, who did not appear, was charged with having erected an external wall in wood in the brick area. The Magistrate commented that he had reviewed tne evidence given previously and had also made an inspection. He was satisfied that Mr Garner had defied, the Borough Council, and a fine of £lO, with costs £3 Is, would be imposed.

FAILURE TO FURNISH RETURNS. Tom Stubbs, of Palmerston North, hosiery manufacturer, was charged with failure to furnish before April 8, 1925, a return of all land in respect whereof he was assessable for taxation purposes. In entering a plea of guilty _ on behalf of defendant, Air Laurenson said that his client was not a big land-holder. Air Cooke, who appeared for the department, said that defendant bad systema-tic-ally failed l'or some years to furnish returns in the place of which default assessments had had to be made. The prosecution was one of a series that was being made throughout the Dominion. The Magistrate imposed a line of £5, with costs £1 Bs.
