HOCKEY.

SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Only one ladies’ hockey match was played at the Sportsground on Saturday afternoon when High School Old Girls’ beat Ramblers A (5 —0). West End Old Girls’ made the trip to Rongotea and drew with the local team (1 —1). Ramblers B forfeited to Technical.

The Sportsground was in fine order and the day was just cold enough to make the game fast. From the bully, Ramblers took possession and initiated a passing bout which, however, was .quickly stopped by the High School Old Girls’ front line. The ball was sent back to Ramblers’ ground and for a few minutes matters looked serious for the defenders, H.S.O.G. making a strong effort to break through. A corner was conceded but Ramblers cleared and carried play to their opponents’ ground. A sharp skirmish for possession resulted in D. Turner making a fine dash along the line with the result that the scene of operations was transferred to Ramblers’ circle. A fruitless attempt at goal was made, the hall being lost behind. From the corner D. de Clene scored and sent in a hot shot which beat the goalie.—H.S.O.G. 1, Ramblers’ 0.

In the ensuing few minutes, play was fast and open both sides using their sticks io advantage. However, H.S.O.G. gradually took play to their opponents’ circle and R. Burton netted.—2—o.

From the bully, Ramblers forced the pace and looked like scoring, but the opposing backs did fine work and nullified their efforts with the result that soon a strong counter-attack was in progress. Play was quickly carried to Ramblers’ ground and G. Wilton essayed a shot which missed the net by inches. Within the next few minutes, she again failed to net by a narrow margin. In the second spell, H.S.O.G. took possession and were soon in their opponents’ territory when a free hit was awarded them for a breach of the sticks rule. Ramblers, however, cleared and carried play to their opponents’ twenty-five, only to be rolled back. H.S.O.G. made a determined assault on Ramblers’ citadel but one of the players missed a good opportunity and the Rambler backs cleared. Following a bully on the twenty-five yards line, H.S.O.G. moved rapidly up the field and following a passing rush G. Wilton scored.—3—o.

Ramblers carried play back to their opponents’ ground but G. McKenzie secured and making a fine dash down the line beat her opponents and scored another goal for R.S.O.G. —4—o. Up and down play followed the bully, neither side gaining much ground until G. Wilton secured from near the circle and beating the goalie again netted.—-s—o, Time sounded shortly afterwards, no further score being registered. Mr Matthews refereed. The scorers in the Rongotea-West End Old Girls’ match were M. Scott (Rongotea) and M. Newtli (W.E.0.G.). Mr Broughton referred. NOPERA CUP MATCH. TEAM SELECTED.
