INSTITUTE OF HORTICULTURE.

ANNUAL MEETING OF LOCAL BRANCH. The annual meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the Institute of Horticulture was held last evening, the president, Mr F. J. Nathan, occupying .'tho cihair. {Others present were : Messrs T. F. Conway, P. Black, J. Nairn and J. J. Stevenson. The annual report (as already published) was adopted without discussion. Tho past year’s officers were reelected, as follow: —President, Mr F. J. Nathan; vice-presidents, Messrs P. Black and J. Goring Johnston; executive committee, {Messrs J. J. Stevenson, B. H. Just, T. F. Conway, A. J. Shailer, J. Galland and F. J. Oakley; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. J. Stevenson. A paper on horticultural education was read bv the secretary, who, inter alia, stated lie was of the opinion that the requests that had been made for a Chair of ~multure were not justified until fuller use was made of the present facilities for horticultural education. ’The chairman commented that it was a pity that members had not been supplied with copies of the paper beforehand, as an interesting and instructive discussion could then have resulted. He regretted that horticul-

tural education was not being more sought after, and the institute should endeavour to get parents to see that their children took full opportunity of the advantages that were at present offered. Classes in botany and ontomologv could be started at the local Technical School if only 12 boys signified their intention to attend. Mr Stevenson suggested that more local interest could be aroused in horticultural matters if men at the head of the institute were brought to Palmerston North for the purpose of giving lectures on the subject. The chairman advised tho secretary to get into touch with Cr. Oram to see if such could be arranged under municipal auspices. It was decided to forward the secretary’s paper to the annual conference of the institute, which is to be held in Wellington towards the end ol next month.
