FALL FROM CLIFF.
ACCIDENT AT NEW PLYMOUTH
Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH. June 29. James Scanlan, aged 19, who was on the Herald reporting staff, disappeared from near the summit of Paritutu on Sunday afternoon. He and a companion named Stephenson had undertaken to climb the rock, which is 500 feet high, and were quite close to tho summit when Scanlan, who was an experienced climber, decided to climb round a difficult rock, while Stephenson took an easier track. When tlie latter reached the summit a few minutes later there was no sign of Scanlan, wiio apparently had missed his footing and fallen. Search parties were sent out and two young men climbed the rock in the darkness, but there was no trace of Scanlan. The search was resumed this morning when signs of a fall were found, indicating that the body will be found in the sea at the base of the rocks.
