LICENSING QUESTION.

POLLS IN QUEENSLAND.

BRISBANE, May 18.

Local option polls were held in forty-three areas on Saturday. In twenty-five, extending from Gimpie southward, the issue-was prohibition, and in the remainder, in various parts of the State, the issue was whether new licenses should be granted. In all areas except-three the “wets” secured a majority and in those three the “dry” majorities were non-effective owing to their not reaching the necessary three-fifths of the total vote. Some returns are still incomplete, hut the result is not likely to be altered.

The poll in the Toowoomba East and Toowoomba electorates resulted in 4251. votes for and 6044 against prohibition. In both electorates the continuance vote showed an increase' over the last poll.—Press Association.
