“MASSEY AVENUE.”

WHY LABOURITE AGREED. “IT IS A BLIND STREET.” DUNEDIN, March 27. At a meeting of the City Council the works committee recommended that a certain new street be named Massey Avenue. Cr Clark objected. He said that while he had a great respect for the gentleman after whom the street was proposed to be named, lie did not approve of the practice of so naming a street during the lifetime of tho one whose name it took. Cr MacManus (Labour’s representative on the council) took a different view. “I think Massey Avenue is most appropriately named,” he said jocularly and tho councillors waited expectantly for his reasons. “It is a blind street.” (Laughter.) Voices: No, it’s not. Cr MacManus: It is a blind street, and a somewhat twisted one. There was a laugli from the council' lors, and Cr MacManus was heard to say something about Mr Massey always leading his followers into a cul de sac. “I think it is most appropriately named,” he concluded. The committee’s report was adopted.
