Furkert. engineer-in-chief, Publio Works Department, acknowledging receipt of the council's letter objecting to the maximum heavy traffic license fees for classes A and B, motor lorries not plying for hire, and stating, in reply, that it waa proposed to include in the regulations a definition of motor lorries, excluding cars not plying for hire or not used for cornmurcial purposes in the carriage of passengers or goods.—Received. From A. Markman. Registrar of Motor Vehicles, acknowledging receipt of the council's protest against the use of tho letters "N.Z." on number plated ahd against the requirement that owners of motor vehicles must purchase new plaU 9 annually. In reply, tho writer stated that it was not certain that for the next and following yeai'3 "N.Z." would appear on number plates. At the present time the number of motor vehicles in tho respective parts of tho Dominion was not known, and, in placing a "rush" order in America for number plates, it would have been a difficult matter to decide exactly how many plates would be required for each particular district. In tho circumstances, for the first year's working, at any rate, it was considered that, the letters "N.Z." would meet the position. With regard to the requirement that owners purchase l newplates annually, it was possible that this might be altered also. In any case, the cost of tho plates was smnll. and if owners were required to annually purchase' new plates he did not think that' they would find tho requirement a hardship.—Received. From Mr J. A. Nash. M.P., acknowledging receipt of tha council's letter with reference to a deputation to the Prime Minister for the purpose of urging him to arrange for a loan to local bodies of amounts required by them for main highways, and advising that, as there was every prospect of Mr Massoy being at his office very shortly, it would be best to defer any further arrangements until then. —It was decided to consider the matter at tho next meeting.
