Dr. Truby Kinff (Director of Cliild Welfare) has returned to Wellington after a brief visit to Auckland. The death is announced of Mr Fred Sladen, of Messrs Sladen and Sons, a wellknown Christchurch citizen. Dr. Bransgrove has been appointed honorary eye, ear, noso and throat specialist at the Palmerston North hospital. Mr J. Brown, District Traffic Manager for tliu Railway Department at Wanganui, was in Palmerston North yesterday and to-day on official business. Dr. Forrest, medical superintendent of the Palmenton North hospital, has returnod from his annual vacation and has resumed his duties at the institution. Mr G. Greig, railway traffic inspector, hns undertaken the duties of commercial agent for Otago for the Railway Department.
Mr J. McKain, of the local staff of the A.M.P. Society, leaves to-morrow for Napier to which branch ho has been promoted in the capacity of superintendent. The Colonial Auxiliary Forces officers' decoration has been awarded to Colonol J. Findlay, 0.8., D. 5.0., commander 3rd N.Z. Mounted Rifles Brigade. Mr Justice Ostler occupied the Supreme Court Bench at Wellington yesterday for the first time since his appointment and dealt with divorce cases. Visitors welcomed nt to-day'3 meeting of the Rotary Club, over which the president, Kotarian F. J. Nathan, presided, were Mews A. Hannay, J. H. Stevens E. H. Crabb, J. A. Colquhoun and Dr. Bell. Mr K. M. Ollivior, who has been manager of the Waimate branch of the Bank ot New Zealand for some time, has been promoted to the position of accountant of the Auckland branch. A Sydney cablegram states that Sir Archibald and Lady Edmonstono and also I.nrd and Lady Somerleyton, who are at present visiting Australia, intend to proceed to New Zealand shortly. His many friends will bo pleasod to learn that Mr Frank Mason, of Sandon road, Feilding, who was operated on last week for appendicitis, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery. Professor P. 11. Poweil, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Canterbury College, lias returned after a twelve months' visit to England, where he purchased apparatus to the value of about £6OOO for the School of Engineering. Mr W. G. Sandford, late colonol of the American secret' ■ service, has arrived in Auckland by the Niagara from Vancouver. Mr Sandford, who is accompanied by Mrs Sandford, will tour the Dominion, later proceeding to Australia. , Mr William C. Genron, who died in Auckland Recently, aged 97 years, was born in Ilathkalo, Ireland. When 18 years of aire he went to America, going later to Australia and corning to New Zealand in 1855. Mr S. R. Lancaster, who is at present routined to his bed, was, at the monthly meeting of the Kairanga County Council to-day, of which body he is chairman, made the subject of a resolution expressing a desire that ho would ' soon be about again. Messrs J. R. Cunninghamo, T. R. Dodder, L. R. Bryant and W. Weavers, of tho Northern Bowling Club, left this afternoon for Nelson. The party expects to be absent for a week or ten days and anticipates enjioying some bowling during tho holiday. Mr S. R. Ijancnster, who ie at present indisposed, was accorded a motion of sympathy at yesterday's meeting of the Muni-watu-Orotia Power Board. The secretarywas instructed to forward Mr Lancaster a letter expressing the board's hope that ho would have a speedy recovery. Mr 11. Baddeley, who has left tho employ of the 11. ii. Farmers' branch at J lannovirko, has taken up a position at I'almerston North with the New Zealand ]x>an and Mercantile Agency. Guthrie, late Minister of Lands, who has been suffering from illhealth for many months, was seized with nil internal liaemorrhage last . week, and iiad to receive medical attention, lie is at his home at Poekakariki. It is Mr Guthrie's intention to retire from politics at the end of the present Parliament this year. A Te Awamutu telegram states that after 29 years' service as clerk of the Waipa County, Mr Bowden will retire at the end of March. At yesterday's meeting of the council it was stated that Mr Bowden had a wonderful record, having never missed a meeting throughout his term of office.

Colonel Spencer-Smith fVrst came to Zealand with General Godley as artillery staff officer, and was very successful in his training of the N.Z.A. Mr C. J. Lancaster, headmaster of tho Chriatchurch Boys' High School, has resigned the .post. of.. Commissioner of Boy Scouts for Christchurch, which ho has occupied for more than two years. The executive of the Chriatchurch Boy Soouts' local aseociailori placed on record its appreciation of the won; t'one by Mr \,aucaster, and of lis lead".'ship and friendly spirit. Two of Dannevirke's very old residents, Mr and Mrs T. Bates, were visited on Sunday by a number of friends and congratulated on the 53rd anniversary- of their marriage. Pastor Ries and Mr MoNiool conveyed to the old couple the congratulations and good -wishes of friends. Dator, at afternoon tea, Mr and Mrs Bates told their visitors of interesting happenings in the pioneering days. The death occurred at her residence, Hataitai, at an early hour on Saturday morning, of Mrs Rebecca Plimmer, relict of the late Mr Henry Plimmer, formerly of George Street, Wellington North. Mrs Plimmer, who was 74 years of age, was predeceased by her husband and two sons, the late Mr Harold Plimmer (who was killed whilst motor cycle racing at Palmeraton North some years ago), and Mr John PUromar (formerly of the engineering staff of the Lyttolton Harbour Board). There are two surviving daughters, Mrs Albert E Young, of Christchurcb, and Mrs F. W. Furkert, -wife of the Engineer-m-Chief {or New Zealand.
