SLEEPING IN SHED.
MAN DESCRIBED AS ABSOLUTE WASTER. GETS ONE MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT. A young man named C hailes W. J J. Burns, who appeared at the Police Court this morning before Messra A. .1. Graham and C. H. Whitehead, J.'sP., was made the subject of some strong comment t-y SeniorSergeant O'Grady. Accused was charged that, at an early hour this mi : , '.iing, he was found without lawful excuse, but in circumstances which did not disclose the intention to commit any other orh.e, in a shed on the Campbell street s .hool site. Accused pleaded guilty. "This, man has been sleeping in tho shed for some nights past," commented ScniorSergeant O'Grady. "He is a ma-.vied man with two children, but iie gives them nothing. On Christmas Eve Mid up to 1 n.m. on Christmas Day his wife was pushing a perambulator with tho two children about the streets looking for somewhere to sleep. She had no money. Accused has elone nothing to help her and is an absolute waster who will take no responsibility for his "ife ami children. He does not work and has b«wn knocking about the town drinking with hi* boon companions. i Accused: I will work if 1 can -fet n job. Mr Graham: Thero is no difficulty in getting work in this town. Accused: I have walked Irnni Wellington to Palmerston North and have bean unable to get a" job. In reply to a query from the Bench ae to whether accused had been before* the Court before, tho senior-sergeant ?-iid that Burns had been in trouble with tho Defence authorities and was even row sought by tho department. Sentence of one month's imprisonment was imposed.
