CHARGE OF CONSPIRACY.
BIG MONEY INVOLVED. SYDNEY, Dec. 27. By four arrests made yesterday the police believe they have nipped in the bud a company promotion swindle running into many thousands of pounds. The four men arrested are well known in the State. One is a former member of the' -State Parliament, the second an hotel keeper, the third a company promoter, and the fourth declared that ho is an inventor. The men are alleged to have operated in country districts and in one town alone they are believed to have raised £7500. It is stated by the police that persons who bought shares in the proposed company were informed that millions hud been invested in the scheme already. Warrants for the arrest of four men were issued in the country, and as soon as these reached Sydney the police here took action. They had previously had the men under observation, and no time was lost in making the arrests. Three of the men were taken in a Pittstreet building and the fourth was found in Cleveland-street. A motor car in their possession was confiscated and taken to police headquarters. Tho arrests were effected by Detec-tive-Sergeant Wilson and Detective Arnold, of headquarters. The four men were charged with conspiracy, and each was granted £6OO bail, but only one yesterday was able to procure it.
