YOUNG STEWARD'S RESENTMENT

FINED FOR ASSAULT. Per Press Assoeiat'on. ' AUCKLAND, Jan. 6. While Mr H. Kirk, chief steward of the steamer Makura, was partaking of Christmas dinner with a lady on board the vessel, they were treated to a deluge of hot soup. John Gordon Lovell, a young steward, was today charged with assault on the high seas in the Police Court. It transpired that the incident was the result of a reprimand by Kirk three days previously. Lovell came to the door remarking that he had only a few days to go and threw the contents of a bowl of hot soup at Kirk. Accused was fined £5, including £2 compensation for damage to clothing.
