RAILWAY RETURNS

PASSENGER,TRAFFIC. A special return compiled by tho local railway authorities over the excursion season of December 17, 1924, ■to January 3, 1925, reveals a slight decrease in tho number of passengers travelling outward from Palmer* ton North, as compared with the corresponding period of; 1923-24. Tho total decrease embodies 1607 ordinary and 394 excursion tickets, tho revenue suffering theroby to tho extent of £950 (£405 ordinary and £545 excursion). In regard to this sum, however, it has to be remembered that decreased rates for excursion tickets were introduced this year. A comparative tablo for the two periods reveals the following position: PASSENGERS.

GOODS TRAFFIC. A comparison of the outward pa-ssenger-and goods traffic at tho local station for the period December 7, 1924, to January 3, 1925, with that for the corresponding period for 192324 reveals that, although goods traffic, with tho exception of parcels and luggage, shows an all-round increase, passenger traffic shrunk by 1645, the revenue from that tfootnon being £7376 13s 9d, as against* 1 £8873 8s 6d for 1923-24, leaving a total decrease in revenue in all departments of £737 8s Bd.
