RUGBY IN ENGLAND.

OXFORD DEFEATS CAMBRIDGE. LONDON, Dec. 11. The weather for the ’varsity Rugby match at' Twickenham was dull. There was 30,000 people present. After 25 minutes’ play Devitt scored a try for Cambridge, but Barlow failed with the kick. Almost immediately afterwards Jacob sprinted over at, the corner for Oxford. Berkeley’s kick went wide. Oxford continued the attack, and just before the interval Wallace scored. Berkeley again failed, and half-litne . found Oxford leading by six points to throe. On resuming the Cambridge backs got going several times, but met with a powerful defence. A go6d movement set going among the Oxford hacks ended in Jacob getting a try which Berkeley converted. Jn tbe last minutes of the game, Devitt again scored for Cambridge, but Barlow could not add the goal points. Oxford thus won by 11 points to six. The Australian, Raymond, though in an unfamiliar position at full-hack, was the most outstanding success of the match, and except for an occasional tendency to play over far, his display was practically faultless, enhancing his claims for recognition by the international selectors. Wallace and Aiiken (New Zealand) consiltu; ted an effective* combination and played with splendid understanding. The former’s try was the result of brilliant individual effort in which be beat four men.Aiiken‘s defensive touch-finding- was noteworthy. West-lie. was always a conspicu ous figure in the Oxford pack, which, although eclipsed in the loose, held its own in the scrummages anil tight work against the heavier Cambridge men,—A. and N.Z cable.
