PORTSMOUTH DIVISION.

MEMORIAL TO 9750 NAVALS. Five thousand bereaved relatives watched the unveiling in October by the Duke of York at Portsmouth of the memorial to 9750 officers and men of the Portsmouth Naval Division who died in the Great War. He said that it was the last of the three seamarks erected at the chief manning ports in England as silent witnesses of the devotion of more than 25.0UU of our seamen. Tko sun could never set over their graves, scattered as they were over the seven seas, but that stone would keep their memory fresh. That historic port could be proud of her children, who so worthily and readily responded to their country’s call. A minute’s silence was observed, and the Bishop of Southampton, Dr. G. H. Boutflower, dedicated the memorial. Wreaths were placed by the Duke of York, the naval Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Sir S. R. Fremantle, and representatives of the Governments of Australia and Canada.
