JOKOMARU NOTES. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the school committee was held in the school on Monday, December Bth. There were present: Messrs R. W. Guy (chairman). J. MacLure (secretary), G. Walton, J. Schwass, R. Kolly, G. Lampard. The secretary read the minutes of the previous meeting and correspondence as follows : From the headmaster stating that the attendance that day was ninety-nine out ot a roll number of one hundred and fortythree. The majority of the absentees were measles cases and as the percentage "’ as well over ten, ho had written to tho education Board ,to have the attendance at present left out of the average for the quarter. —Received. From the Education Board informing the committee that a number of pictures had been procured in England by one oi the teachers visiting there unu would be supplied to schools free of charge on the condition that they were suitably framed and otherwise looked after. —It was agreed that tho secretary apply for six of the pictures. .. Work around the school was then discussed. It was decided to have tho grass cut down in the holidays and Messrs Kelly and Schwass were appointed to carry out the repairs to tho fences, this matter having beep left over from last meeting. As funds aro recpiired for tho annual school picnic, ways and means of raising them were discussed. As nn oll'cr had been made by the ladies of Tokomaru to help to organise a children’s fancy dress ball, Mr Walton, seconded by Mr Lampard, moved that a meeting of ladies interested be called on December 18th at 8 p.m. in the school with the view to holding a ball early in January, when the additions to the hall aro completed.—Carried. A “working bee” was to have erected a new fence around the Anglican Church last Saturday, but owing •to tho small number present, only halt of tho work was done.

FOXTON. BOROUGH COUNCIL. MONTHLY MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent). The ordinary monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held on Monday night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr John Chrystall), and Crs. Bryant, Smith, Ross, Thompson, Parkin, Walker and Adams. The following reports were read and adopted:— TREASURER’S STATEMENT. During tho month of November the sum of £679 4s 8d was received and has been placed to tho credit of the following accounts: —Cemetery £25 15s. drainage conloan £2 19s Bd, district fund account £650 10s. Tho lodger balances on the 30th November were:—Imprest cash £lO, general £ll3O 8s 6d, interest £342 16s, sanitation £147 3s, Town Hall £199 14s 7d, waterworks £62 8s lOd, all at debit, a total of £1892 10s lid. Tho accounts at credit totalled £2078 6s 7d, and wore made up as follow : —Cemetery £l2O 17s lOd, contractor’s deposits £5, drainage connection loan £157 17s 7d, gasworks £960 3s 6d, hospital and charitable aid £25 11s 6d, house drainage £263 5s Id, library £lO3 16s lid, reserves £77 10s Id, Town Hall pictures £339 13s 2d, water and drainage loan £24 10s lid.

Account amounting to £799 16s 7d were submitted for payment. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The grading and laying of asphalt on Park street, footpatli has almost been completed. Before top-dressing this and the grass at the cemetery and Victoria Park will be cut, after which Park street will be finished off and a start made on Cook street footpath. PUMPING STATION. Maintenance cost totalled £l4 8s Id. Seventy-five hours were spent pumping, 820,000 gallons being pumped at a cost of 4-id per 1000 gallons. GAS MANAGER’S STATEMENT. The plant is working satisfactorily and the apparatus is all in fairly good order. Some of the street lamps have been taken down and tho others will be when time permits. During the months two ealiphonts and two cookers have been installed and a good deal of other work has been done outside. The demand for coke is still good. The amount of gas manufactured during the month of October was 490,600 cubic feet, which, with the amount in the holder on October Ist, 17,600 ft, made a totul of 708,200 ft. During the month 407,300 ft were used by consumers, 20,000 ft in street lamps, 25,500 ft. at the works and there wore 16,200 ft in the bolder on November Ist, making a total of 469,0001't anil leaving 39,200 ft, representing 7.7 per cent, unaccounted for; 45 tons of coal were carbonised during tho month, producing 10,917 cubic feet to tho ton. Nine tons lOcwt of coke were produced. The receipts for the month totalled £2BO 0s 7d and expenditure £271 19s lid. CORRESPONDENCE. From A. Coughtnov applying for permission to erect a motor shed in wood and iron at the rear of premises occupied by him in Main street. —Declined. Frpin Park und Adams forwarding draft of electric lighting agreement from Horowhenua Electric Power Board.—Received. From the Foxton Racing Club asking that a water main be erected down Whyte street, so that it might connect its property. —Declined. GENERAL. During the month of Novembor 25 head of stock were impounded and driving fees to the amount of lls collected.
