Manawatu Evening Standard. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1924. THE BEEF INDUSTRY.
Optimism for the immediate future of the meat export trade of the Dominion appears to be the keynote of the remarks made at Auckland by the chairman of the Meat Producers’ Board, Mr David Jones, in the course of an interview on his return this week from England, -whither he has been on business connected with the board. It has been apparent of late that the Continent of Europe has been takingmore beef, and the increased demand, to use Mr Jones’ expression, has become phenomenal. This, indeed, is very good news for those engaged in beef-raising in New Zealand who have for some time past experienced an unrennuierative market in England. “Already,” says Ml' Jones,' “under the stimulus of Continental consumption, an improvement has taken place.” It is also pleasing to learn that the market for Dominion meat in England is extending, due to the fact that increased sales are being made in tbo provincial towns. Provided the New Zealand farmers can maintain a high quality article, the need for which Mr Jones stresses, there should be no misgivings as to the future of the industry. According to the Year Book for 1924 the' total quantity of beef exported in 1923 was 613,597 cwt, compared with 839,598 cwt in 1922. Under tho new freight contract, arranged ior three years, a saving of £IOO,OOO will be effected for farmers, compared with tho rates ruling last season, while, m a comparison with those ruling bcioro the board was formed, the saving.will be £BOO,OOO. The Meat Producers’ Board has thus done very good service to the producers who will await tho publication of Mr Jones’ full report "to the board with interest.
