LICENSEE’S FAILURE
.CAUSE OF BANKRUPTCY. A statement has been made to the D.0.A., Mr C. E. Dempsy, by John A. D. Sutherland, of Apiti, hotelkeeper, as to the reason for his filing a petition in bankruptcy. . “From the time I took over the Apiti Hotel,” says the statement, “business has never been up to what it was represented to me to be. I was informed that the takings were £SO a week, whereas they have only boen about £2O. Added to this is the fact that nearly twelve months ago Mrs Sutherland and the daughters left Apiti, since when I have been forced to employ labour to attend to the house. At my wife’s request I bought a motor ear, thinking that I could make a profit from it carting iny own goods and doing taxi work, but this was not successful and I lost £125 over the transaction. I incurred heavy expenses shifting to Apiti from Wellington, and during the last six or eight months I have reduced my liabilities as much as possiblo, and now I am left penniless with t.hreo little children to support. The takings book was removed from this hotel three weeks ago and the Kimbolton police have the matter in hand.” The financial statement shows the amount owing to unsecured creditors as £231 17s fid, and to secured creditors £156. Assets 'are estimated at £6O. The secured weditot 1 it) A. D. Kennedy, of Wellington, and the principal unsecured creditors are: T. and W. Young, Wellington, £77 13s fid; Barraud and Abraham, Ltd., Palrnerston North, £47 lls 6d, Tui Brewery Go., Mangatainoka, £37 15s 3d, and the Apiti Co-op. Dairy Co., Apiti, £25 3s lOd.
