THE MINIMUM WAGE.
OPINION OF A PROFESSOR. LONDON, December G. Dr A. M. Sanders, Professor, of Social Science at Liverpool University, in lecturing on the standard of life, said scientific investigations showed that the minimum for a family of five in Britain ought to be G'2s 4d weekly, made up of 2Gs 3d for food, 8s lOd rent, 11s 3d clothing, and 4s fuel, leaving 19s for personal requirements ami recreation. The general council of -.the Trade Union Congress lias appointed a subcommittee to evolve'a scheme for carrying out the Hull Congress resolution in favour of a reduction of the number of trade unions, in order to present a united front for the improvement of the workers’ standard of life. It is hoped to reduce the 1135 unions affiliated to the Congress to 50, or less—A. and N.Z. cable.
