The Legislative Council yesterday granted Sir James C'arroll 10 days’ leave of absence on account of ill-health. Detective Murray, of Wellington, returned on Wednesday from an extended visit to Britain.
The deaths are reported of Mr John Butler, settler of Wataroa. aged 80 years, and Mr Henry Whetten, of Hokitika, aged
Mr H. Gillies, of Palmerston North, is making splendid progress from his recent illness and expects to leave the hospital shortly.
Sergeant-Major J. Domney, who for some yearslias been a meptber of the Dannevirke defence staff, left on Wednesday for Marton, where he has been transferred.
Lieut.-Colonel R. Eccles Snowden, who was recently appointed Agent-General for Tasmania, arrived in Wellington by tho L limaroa from Sydney, en route to England to take up his new duties. Mr J. H. Handysido, prior to leaving Feilding for Masterton, where he is to take over the position of manager of the branch of the Farmers’ Distributing Company there, was mado the recipient of a presentation from tho Feilding staff. Superintendent W. Fouhy„of Wanganui, will be given leave from August 4 prior to his retirement on superannuation from the police force after 43 years’ service. He •will be succeeded by Sub-Inspector McIlveney, at present stationed at Christchurch.
