Mr D. Younger has been appointed clerk of works to the Feilding Borough Council.

Mr S. T. Hunt, of 37 Ada street, is, his many friends will regret to learn, at present seriously indisposed.

The induction of the Rev. John Paterson as pastor of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Wanganui, took place yesterday afternoon.

The Rev. John Hobbs, formerly ol Pahnerston North, will conduct services at Christ Church, Wanganui, until an appointment is made to fill the place of Ven. Archdeacon Reeve.

The death is reported by cable of William Fernie, golf professional to the Troon Club (Scotland), aged 66 years. He was open champion in 1883 and second on five occasions.

The University of London has conferred the title of Professor of Surgery on the New Zealander, Dr. Choyce, in respect of his appointment as director of the surgical unit of the University College Hospital School at Antwerp.

Mr L. V. Carmine, one of the Al! Black selectors, who has received notice of his transfer in the railway service from Westport to Wanganui, was entertained at a smoke concert at Westport last night, w hen he was made the recipient of several presentations. The death of one of Dunedin's old identities,' Mr John Joseph Connor, took place recently. Deceased was 85 years of age. With the late Dr. Moran, first Catholic . Bishop of Dunedin, and others, he founded thg Tablet.

Mr Daniel Cant, who died at Christ church recently aged 79, was a member of the EUesmere A. and P. Association and a noted breeder of pure Berkshire pjgs, and had acted as judge of this breed ar various shows throughout New Zealand. He was also a breeder of Jersey-Ayrshire. cattle and of light horses.

General Sir A. J. Godley, K.C.8., K.C.M.G., who has been General Officer ('ommanding-in-Chief the British Army of the Rhine, has been appointed General Officer Commanding-in Chief, Southern Command, in succession to General Sir W. X. Congreve, V.C., K.C.8., M.V.O. (states a London correspondent, under dale of 20th May). Lieut.-General Sir J. P. Du Cane, K.C.8., has been selected to succeed General God'.oy with the British Army of Occupation on the Rhine. General Godley formerly commanded the New Zealand Defence Forces.

''Sister May R>ilph has continued her work as circuit deaconess with zealous industry, and in many ways fostered our interests," states the annual report of St. Paul's Methodist Church. ''She has borne a worthy part in all departments of activity, and everywhere, by business-like attention to detail, and by picking up the loose threads others may have dropped, has ensured the smooth running of man\ of the enterprise* of our different organisations. She is <> splendid .asset in our work."

The death occurred yesterday morning at his residence at Horowhenua of one of the best known and most widely respected native residents of that district in the person of Mr John Broughton, aged 68. Deceased, who was born at Lake Horowhenua, was a son of .Mr Charles Jsroughton, a native interpreter who was afterwords killed by the Hauhaus in the Taranaki war, when taking a message to a besieged pa. His mother was a member of the Mauopoko tribe, and a connection of Major Kemp, who led the friendly natives in the Taranaki and liawke's Day wars. The late Mr Broughton was brought up in the Rangitikei district, returning to Levin in early manhood and resided there ever since. He was a member of the florou henna Lake Domain Board and did good work in this connenction, being keenly interested in the preservation of- what is generally recognised as one of Levin's greatest scenic assets. He is survived by four sons and four daughters. ''The Rev. M. A. Rugby Pratt has been our minister fot rather, more than a year," state* the annual report of St. l'aul's Methodist Church. "His work has been characterised by energy, promptness, ability and devotion. His administration of church affairs has left nothing to be desired, while his pastoral work has been excellent, and his preaching has been thoughtful and helpful. Mr Pratt has throughout given his best, which ha* prompted respect and affection for him throughout the church. The Sunday services, especially the morning service, have iu recent months shown a marked increase in attendance and in spiritual aspirations, and we express the opinion of our church as a whole when we say that wo trust Mr Pratt will for many years be spared to be our minister. We also desire to congratulate him on his appointment 1o the important office of chairman of the Hawke's Bay-Manawatu District." The death occurred at the hospital yesterday of an old identity in the person of Mr Richard Joseph Conlin. The deceased's parents came out to New Zealand in the early days, Mr Conlin being born in Tinakori road. Wellington, in the year 1848, when the Empire City was but a small pioneer settlement. a young man lie took up the occupation of a slaughterman, being employed by one of Wellington's earliest butchers, Mr Ling. At different periods he was in the employ of the .Meat Exporting Company at (lie Ngahauranga works, and the Gear Meat Company, but for the past 20 years had been engaged by the National Mortgage and Agency Company, Limited, at their Longburn works. A man of splendid constitution, deceased had. like so many pioneers, never required medical attention until his final illness. On Monday last lie was ordered to hospital and his death which followed yesterday was quite unexpected. He is survived by a widow, two sons and two daughters, the members of the family being Messrs C. J'", and V. J. Coniin and Mrs T. Huick. all of Palmerston North, and one married daughter, who resides in Wellington,
