PRODUCER PAYS.
MIDDLEMEN'S PROFITS IN LONDON MARTS. CONTROLLED MARKETING. LONDON, May 27. "Visits to Covent' Garden have convinced me that Australia needs a first-class fresh fruit marketing organisation in London, if the producers wish to secure better prices," says Mr E. Rose, a West Australian member of Parliament. "A controlled marketing scheme similar to the dried fruits organisation should replace the present haphazard methods," he added. "It should not be possible for thousands of cases to be sold wholesale us cheaply as at present. There is a big difference between the wholesale and retail prices, and the middlemen reap big profits at the producer's expense. "It is a foolish policy simultaneously to flood the market with American, New Zealand, South African, and Australian apples. A control organisation, with cold storage facilities, could arrange similar organisations as South Africa and New Zealand, who market supplies in rotation and regulate according to the demand, thus keeping up prices and cutting the British middlemen's pockets. "A similar organisation is essential for canned fruits as Australian fruit production develops."
