ORPHEUS SOCIETY.

The Palmerston North Orpheus Society (formerly Liedertafel) has recently found great difficulty in carrying on, owing to the lack of tenor voices, and as that' trouble has become very acute, it was decided at a meeting of the society to go into recess till March next year. It is hoped that sufficient voices will then offer to justify the reappearance of the choir. It is to be deplored that this step has been found necessary as the organisation has been in existence for about 17 years and has given a great deal of pleasure to the music-loving public. Oilier towns in the Dominion, such as Wanganui, Gisboriie and New Plymouth have flourishing male ehoirs, with an active membership of 40 or 50, and it seems rather a reflection on Palmerston North that it cannot produce sullicient male singers to support a male choir. At the competitions held here in 1922, the judge, Mr Robert Parker, was very eulogistic in criticising tho society's work, and expressed the opinion that "the town should be very proud to possess such a fine male choir." The same year the choir won the male choir competition in Wellington and received a very complimentary criticism from tho judge. This goes to show that tho society's work was good, and that it only needs the support of those who can sing, and the general public, to again make their appearance on the concert platform.
