AWFUL MURDER

CRIME IN FAR NORTH i MAORI KILLS HIS WIFE, SKULL BATTERED WITH STONE, FATAL ACCIDENT TO MURDERER. (Per Press Association.) WHANGAREI, Juno 9. An atrocious murder at Waimea, a native settlement near Rawcne, Hokianga, occurred about 2 o'clock on Satuardy morning, a Maori named Ruki Pene battering his wife's skull with a stone, and the victim expiring at noon. The first intimation given to the settlement was by children of the victim excitedly crying: "Father is murdering mother; come quick." The natives found the woman in a whare in a dying condition and with a bloodstained stone alongside. In the meantime Pene disappeared. A hue and cry was raised and eventually he was located at Rawenr, where Peiie had climbed a tree in view of hiding. Finding this futile, he leaped from the tree, a distance of 30 feet, into a shallow creek, occasioning concussion and unconsicousnoss. He was conveyed by train to Whangarei and expired en route at Whakapara. The post mortem examination reveals a fracture of the base of the skull. Jealousy is supposed to have boon the motive of the crime. The woman was aged about 50 years. ■ .i urn.' .
