♦ ■ - FIFTH ANNUAL MEETING. The fifth annual meeting of the Palmerston North Chess Club was held last night, the president, Mr W. H. Messenger, presiding. The annual report, as published in the "Standard" yesterday, was read and adopted, it being mentioned tha'l the invitations from Nelson and Christchurch to matches referred to telegraph fixtures. The balance-sheet, which disclosed a loss of £5 on the year's working, was also adopted. It was explained in this regard that the deficit was due to several of last year's accounts being paid out of this year's ■ revenue. There were about 20 financial members. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President. Mr 11. R. Thorburn; vice-presidents, Messrs G. R. Morine and K. Thorburn; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr G. H. Espiner; committee, Messrs A. Whitaker, A. 11. M. Wright and F. tiatley ; delegate to New Zealand Chess Association, Mr 11. G. Lee (Wellington) ; honorary auditor, Mr F. W. Connell ; custodian, Mr T. A. Morine. GENERAL. In connection with a proposal to change the night of meeting it was decided to take a ballot of members to ascertain their wishes in this connection. On the motion of Mr Morine it was decided, that the next handicap tournament be [liayed in senior and junior sections. Votes of thanks were accorded the retiring officers, the press, Mr A. Whitaker and Mr T. A. Morine, the last-named having acted as custodian. At the conclusion of the meeting, a

lightning match was played between teams chosen by the president, and the champion (Mr G. A. Morine), with a time limit of thirty seconds per move. Mr Morine's team won. The results were as follow: 11. R. Thorburn 1, G. R. Morine 0; W. H. Messenger J, T. A. Morine i; L. Thorburn 0, A. G. Richards 1; K. Thorburn 1, A. Whitaker 0; F. Gatley 0, G. H. Espiner 1; C. Thorburn 0, E. Corston 1; W. Nasmith 0, H. Christensen 1. Totals, 2i and 4£.
