TAXATION OF LAND.
OBJECTION BY FARMERS. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, May 6. The taxation Commission finished its sittings here to-day. Mr R. Morten, sheepfarmer, of Tai Tapu, said that land tax, as a class tax, was an evil example of the capital tax levied on the primary industry of the country. The remedy, if capital was to be taxed, was in a property tax, which would be levied on all property. Mr E. Hay, sheepfarmer, of Pigeon Bay, said he was also opposed to the land tax. "It will bo the best day for New Zealand when the land tux is wiped out," he said, "the land will be better looked after and better improved." He contended that it would be much fairer to tax the farmers on their income.
