IN MANAWATU COUNTY. COMMITTEE TO REVIEW CASES. The damage done to its roads by heavy motor traffic was the subject of 4 brief discussion at the meeting of the Manawatu Council on Tuesday. The matter came under review on receipt of a letter from the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board asking if it could not come to some arrangement with the Council in regard to its lorries continuing to tise the county roads so as to prevent the Board's 'work being hindered. Cr. Barber: If the Board pays, £25 arrangement can be arrived at. The chairman (Sir Jas. Wilson): Oh, we can't stop the work. Tbe Board can get a license. Cr. Barber: What about the char-a-bancs? Cr. Boyce: Yes, they are worse than the motor lorries. The county clerk (Mr A. K. Drew); It depends on whether the char-a-bancs come within the definition of heavy traffic—3ocwt. to each pair of wheels. Cr. Barber: Then we will catch them every time with a full load. <""-» chairman: What about cream lowes ? Cr. Barber: Serve them all alike. The clerk stated that one dairy factory had informed him that it would put on a light lorry. The chairman: That will be all right. On the motion of Cr. Barber, a committee comprising the chairman . and Crg. Penny and Fagan was set up to deal with matters arising out of the heavy traffic by-laws, with power to make special arrangements in cases where such were deemed necessary, the Power Board being cited as a case in point. It was also decided .that it be advertised that the closing of the Manawatu County , roads to heavy traffic would take effect from May 12.
