OUTBREAK OF TYPHOID.

EPIDEMIC IN TOKIO. SEVERAL HUNDRED DEATHS. Received March 20, 9.5 a.m. TOKIO, March 19. The city has been swept by a typhus epidemic. For the past 70 days jthe number of cases reported was 1739, with 395 deaths. The authorities, after investigations, learned that refugees living in barracks were the chief sufferers. The physicians blame the exceptionally dry winter, frequent whirlwinds and dust storms, and the shortage of sprinklers. A thorough inspection throughout the city is being planned.—A. and N.Z. cable.
