GATHERING AT TRENTHAM
JAMES LEADING FOR THE BELT,
(Per Press Association.) TRENTHAM, March 19. Two cadets put up a fine performance, competing in open company at the National Rifle Association’s meeting to-day. Hare, a Northland (Wellington) boy, got on tv.-o 47’s Marlborough match and another 47 in the Canterbury Match. Keane, of Hamilton, knocked up 47 and 43 in the Marlborough match, following this with 46 in the Canterbury match. Both were entered as tyros, but their novice days are now over. With three matches gone for the Belt, the leading division is composed of James 242, Elliot 236, Croxton, Barker, G. L. Evans and Simmonds each 234, Boon 233, Soler, Blackwood and Corkill each 231, Connor and Caldwell each 230, West and Hester each 229, Molver, H. Crouue, Nix, P. Nicholls, Gillick and Orr each 228, Williams, R. J. King, W. H. Ballinger, Nielson each 227, Harris, W. J. Feast, junior, H. Feast, Keir, E. S. King each 226. , i An extra match, five shots at 900 yards, was won by G. H. Taylor. New Plymouth, with the spore 24. Eleven made 23 and four 22, the last one being counted out. The wind had dropped and the shooting consequently was good, giving the men a chance to get the hang of the range for the longrange Taranaki match. The scores in the Auckland match, ten shots at 300 and 600 yards, were as follow:—£s, F. H. James (Napier), 97; £4, Capt. H. Simmonds (Wanganui), 96; £3, C. Corkill (Waipukurau), 96; £2, A. R.
