SWIMMING CONFERENCE.
DECISIONS OF DELEGATES.
(Per Press Association.!
WANGANUI, Jan. 29. The conference of delegates attending the New Zealand amateur swimming championships was continued this afternoon, Mr \V. E. D. Bishop (Christchurch) presiding. There were also present: Messrs D. Mulvihill, F. J. Boggs (Auckland), E. D. Berry (South Auckland), H. Le Bus, C. L. Crooks (Hawke’s Bay), H. J. Parsonage (Manawatu), J. lieid, A. Muller (Wanganui), V. Allen, V. N. Beasley (Wellington), C. Atkinson, D. Coulter (Canterbury), F. J. Dunn (South Canterbury), F. Dunn, junr., and B. O’Neill. A recommendation was made that the council should not allow any national championships to be contested in a swimming bath under 33 1-3 yards in length. Mr Beasley said there was no local feeling in the matter, but it was felt that a bath 25 yards long was too short for national championships. As to depth, the baths should comply with the rules of diving. At present polo in a shallow bath was very awkward. Usually there was more accommodation where there was a larger bath. They wanted, howover, to leave it to the council, and they did not want to debar a centre like Wanganui. Mr Reid asked if they wanted to cut out all places but Auckland .and Wellington. Mr Mulvihill said that what was wanted was to get rid of heats in the long distance races. Mr Dunn, jnr., said the rest of the swimming world recognised the 25 yards bath.
Mr Reid said he felt that the remit was on the order paper to get at Wanganui. They had had no complaint from the competitors. Mr O’Neill considered the 33 1-3 yards bath was a nasty hybrid. The ideal bath was the 50-metre bath. The remit was carried by seven votes to five.
It was decided to refer to the committee already appointed the following remit from Auckland: ‘That the time is now due when the Government should appoint a swimming instructor for each island.” It was agreed that the 1925 New Zealand swimming championship meeting be held at Christchurch. LIFE-SAVING COMPETITION. WANGANUI, Jan. 29. The Nelson Shield life-saving competition in connection with the swimming championships was held at Castleclilf this afternoon in beautiful weather. The result was: Maranui 159 points, Lyall Bay 144 2-3, New Brighton 142, North Beach 137 2-3, Castiecliif 124 2-5. BORG MAKES NEW RECORD. BRISBANE, Jan. 29.
