WEST END SCHOOL.
MONTHLY MEETING
The monthly meeting of the West End School Committee was held in the school last evening, when there were present: Messrs C. 11. Whitehead (in the chair), I. Carpenter, 11. E. Mouldy, W. E. Presnail, G. Dyne and W. 1. Lovelock. CORRESPONDENCE.
From the Education Board, Wanganui, informing the committee that tho subsidy of £l6 11s 6d was not payable until accounts or receipts for £29 3s for pictures for the classrooms and unprovements to the school rooms, as set out in the application for subsidy, bail been forwarded.—The secretary was instructed to procure and lorward same. GENERAL. The schedule of duties relative to the appointment of tho new caretaker, as drawn up, was discussed and some essential points were untended. —It was decided to advertise for a male caretaker at a salary of £8 per calendar month. DENTAL CLINIC. The chairman and secretary reported having attended a meeting of the Combined Schools’ Connnittea at the Central school on Monday evening and of having visited tho dental clinic in connection with additional furnishings required. The chairman stated that the estimated cost per school would be in the neighbourhood of £2, and the secretary was instructed to obtain quotations. The various representatives had expressed satisfaction with the position and were prepared to meet their liability on the above basis.—The action of the representatives was duly endorsed. HEADMASTER’S REPORT, The headmaster (Mr A. W .Thompson) reported on tho work of tho school for the past mouth as under:--The roll at present is 375. During the past two weeks 21 pupils were admitted and 16 withdrawn. There are now 124 pupils in the infant department and this is tho maximum numoer this department can accommodate. Tho above number (376) is the maximum allowed for the whole school. At present 13 names remain on ihe waiting list and lho.su will l>e taken in as vacancies occur, Tho half-yearly examination was conducted this week and progress cauls will be distributed at the end of next wiek. Empire Day was celebrated on May 24. Addresses on the significance of the day vote given by the headmaster and by Mr H. Hamilton. Suitable lessons in geography, history, ole., wore given by class teachers during (he day. lan Campbell was adjudged the winner in the competition conducted by the local Returned Soldiers’ Association for designs for u suitable headstone for soldiers’ graves. Tho report was adopted.
