Mr Kirkwood: "If it hadn’t been for the Scotch, the Germans would have leathered ye.” Major Paget angrily retorted; "The actions of some Scottish Commoners caused the death of the gallant 15th Division, in which I served.” Pandemonium ensued. ’Mr Kirkwood leaping up passionately and menacingly waving his hands, shouted: "You are a liar!” Mr Robertson; “I liud four sons in the war.” Mr Buchanan, also attempting to get at Major Paget, called him a "dirty cur.’’ The Speaker intervened, saying Major Paget's remarks were offensive, and the Major apologised. The motion was carried by 212 votes to 107. The Labdtir amendment that tho right of asylum in England bo preserved for all was defeated—A. and N.Z. cable.
