Received February 28, 11.15 a.m.. SYDNEY, Feb. 28. _ Mr A. C, Wilkinson, the cricketer, is sailing in the Niagara-for England, being unable to remain in Australia for -the remaining matches, in consequence of the War Office refilling to extend his leave. The Government is inviting applications for a successor to M. Verbrugghen at a salary of £1250 per annum for five years. Applications have been invited from within the Empire. Mr E. S. Marks, secretary of the Athletic Union of Australia and New Zealand, has received a cable from the Swedish Games Committee, which is holding a carnival at Gothenburg in July, inviting four swimmers and four athletes to attend. Free passages to and from Gothenburg are being offered—Press Association. MELBOURNE, Feb. 28.. The Minister of Defence explains that it has been decided to sell the submarines presented by the British Government, as they are obsolete and the cost of repairs and alterations will bo out of proportion to the length of their life. Some of the personnel will be transferred to other branches of the navy and others returned to England—Press Association.
