WEDNESDAY CRICKET.
BIG SCOPES RECORDED. WICKET FAVOURS BATSMEN. The Wednesday cricket fixtures were continued yesterday under fine, but bitterly cold conditions. The wicket was in favour of the batsmen and the teams which obtained the advantage of having first strike compiled respectable totals. The four High School elevens again figured in the competition, but they appear to bo considerably weakened when compared with their representatives of before the vacation. . RAILWAY v. PHOENIX. Railway visited the wickets firsts and, although their opening was not very promising, useful contributions by Lawrence (43), King (83) and Pegdcn (57) carried the score from one wicket for l 3 runs to three for 188. Trovcna (27) also played art excellent innings and at the fall of the 10th wicket the telegraph read 252. Phoenix with but a short time to go entered on their innings, but disaster befell them, as they lost three wickets for five runs. RETAINERS. Retailers won the toss and sent Gordon to the wickets, with the result that the schoolboys gave them an afternoon’s leather hunting. When the 10th wicket fell just on the call of time Gordon had 261 to their credit. An excellent second wicket stand was put up by Treinewan and Spring, the partnership providing 63 runs. The succeeding batsmen all displayed confidence and Thomson, going in fifth wicket, made 51 before succumbing Ibw to Moore. The opening pair fgjr Old Boys, Eyre and Harvey, carried the total to 76 before a separation was effected. The next two wickets went cheaply, but Cockery and Cornish brought the telegraph up to 125 and with contributions from Tullett (28), Sinclair (24), H. E. .Bennett (not out 16) and Brace (13), the fetal stood at 219 for nine wickets, at which stage the innings was declared closed. Kia Ora commenced their innings, but before the attack of Edwards the wickets fell cheaply, and at call of time four batsmen had returned to the pavilion with the total standing at 41, Edwards, with 23 not out, being the only batsman to reach double figures. This match was played on the High School ground on an excellent wicket. Y.M.C.A. put a weak team in the field and their eight batsmen could only record 62, Anderson (17) and Tantrum (25) being the only batsmen to make a stand. Albion replied with 214 for five wickets. Gallichan was top scorer, with. 80 to his credit and MeSwceney made 62.
