An interesting fact concerning the Near East Conference, at Lausanne became known during the Foreign Relations Committee discussions to-day. A correspondent learns that it was revealed thera that Mr Childs (the American representative) was offered tho presidency of the conference, but before raking action communicated with the State Department; President Harding and Mr Hughes decided that it would be unwise to have an American representative take the foremost position. The incident was cited by Senators as an instance of the influence of tha United States in European, affairs.—A. anr N.Z. cable.
