BAINESSE.

ANNUAL SCHOOL PICNIC. ' (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) Friday, February 23, was a red letter day in the memory of the Bainesse School children, but many of their faces wore a disappointed look as they watched the rain palter down. However, by noon the rain stopped and after all we had a glorious day on which to hold the picnic. The beautiful bush section, kindly lent by Mr J. Alsop, also helped to moke the outing an outstanding success. This, in conjunction with the efforts of the committee and their wives, who worked like Trojans, made the picnic one of the- most enjoyable hold in Bainesse. After lunch, widen was supplied by the ladies and was fully appreciated by all, the sports were held. . The latter were in the hands of the following: Judge, Mr Parlato; handicappor, Mr J. Waller; starter,. Mr Grammer; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. Ogilvie. Following were the events and the successful competi-tors,-Girls under 7, Rhoda Grammer 1, Selina Grammer 2; boys under 7 Cohn Waller 1, Isaac Akuira 2; girls under 12, Ruth Terry 1, Doris Smith and Audrey Brooke Taylor (dead heat) 2; boys under 10, Reuben Jeffries 1, Clifton Jeffries 2; boys under 12, Edwin Jeffries 1, W. Pollard 2; single men’s race, All. Grammer 1, W Simpson 2; married ladies, Mrs Parlato 1 Mrs Wheeler 2; single ladies, Joan Beattie 1, Mi,ss A. Karsten 2; married men, Mr J. Waller 1, Mr Parlato 2; hop, step and jump, J. Polard 11, A. Ogilvie 2; girls’ sack race, Ida Parlato 1, Selma Grammer 2; boys’ sack race: Alan Ogilvie 1, Jimmy Akuira 2; boys’ egg and spoon race, J. Akuira 1, Edwin Jeffries 2; girls egg and spoon race, Ida Parlato 1, Lwen Casko 2; thread-the-needle race, Ida Parlato and Alan Ogilvie 1; relay race, Alan Ogilvie’s team 1 (consisting of Ida Parlato, Taylor Brown, Ashley Jeffries. Alan Ogilvie); three-legged race (boys), J. Pollard and Alan Ogilvie 1. Alan Smith and Weldon Jeffries 2; girls’ three-legged race, Sybil Brooke Taylor and Ida Parlato 1. Ruth Terry and Selina Grammer 2; boys standing jump, Alan Smith and Alan Ogilvie 1 (dead heat), Frank Taylor 3; wheelbarrow race, J. Akuira and Alan Ogilvie", Taylor Brown and W. Pollard 2; boys tug of war, J. AkuiraV team 1; senior bovs’ hop, stop and jump, Alf Grammer (34ft 2in) 1, Joseph Wheeler 2; tug of war, married men v.. single, married n<en; tug of war, married ladies v. single, married ladies. THE SPECIAL PRIZE LIST. Mrs Beattie’s prize for sewing, Zilla Brooke Taylor; Miss McKenzie’s prizes for sewing, Sybil Brooke Taylor and Audrey Brooke Taylor; Mr Callanan’s silver medals for physical culture (girls) Zilla Brooke Taylor, (boys) J. Akuira; Mr Swallow’s prizes were awarded to Charlie Daly and Edwin Jeffries for diligence; attendance prizes, Zilla, Sybil, Audrey and Lois Brooke Taylor, Doris, Alan and Arnold Smith, Weldon and Ashley Jeffries, Maggie and Jimmy Akuira, Jack Pollard and Frank Wheeler; school captain, J. Akuira; dux of school, Maggie Akuira (Mr Callanan’s medal). Spenciol mention is due to Weldon and Ashley Jeffries who live as far away from school as anybody else and yet they gained attendance prizes After afternoon tea, cheers were called for Mr Callanan. Miss McKenzie and also Mr Pond, wno so generously lent a_tent for the use of the young children. Tho committee wish to thank the firms in town who donated trophies and prizes., After a very enjoyable day the crowd dispersed only to return to the dance in tho evening.
