FIRES IN AUSTRALIA.
FIVE SHOPS DESTROYED. RESULT OF ABSENCE OP WATER. SYDNEY, Feb. 26. Five shops in Monaro street, Queanbeyan, were destroyed by fire. The damage is estimated at £30 ? 000. The premises were those ol W. Hill, general store; J. Taylor, draper; W. Oldfield, auctioneer; Eeeoe and Short, drapers and stationers; R. Kaye, motor garage proprietor. When the fire was discovered two. buckets of water would have extinguished it, but the links were dry. The local fire brigade was quickly in attendance, but the engine was out of order, and two hours elapsed before a start was made on the fire.—Press Association. OUTBREAK IN CORK FACTORY. MELBOURNE, Feb. 26. , The three-storey cork factory, occupied by the Cork and Crown Seal Company at North Pitzroy, was destroyed by fire on Saturday. The damage was £40,000. —Press Association.
