CLAIMS OF AMERICANS

SHARK OK (’().\i KSSIOXS WANTED*

By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Alii cell 18, 8 a.m. WASHINGTON. March 16

It is understood that Mr Hughes, Secretary of Slate, lately despatched to the. British Government a Note dealing with tlio question of American rights in the, Mesopotamia petroleum concessions, resuming the negotiations which were begun during Dr, Wilson’s administration. Ii is believed the Note was a reply to Lord Curzon’s communication of February 28, 1921. which declared that a British-corpora-tion had obtained a concession trout the Turkish Government before the war for the exploitation of all oil lands in M> ipolamia. Therefore, it was impossible • tor Britain to accede to the American contention that the interests of the United States should have an equal share of the oil development. in Mesopotamia. It is understood that- Mr Hughes has endorsed ex .Secretary of Stale Coley’s contention that the United Slates is entitled to equal rights. Mr Hughes has also disputed the validity of the ’I urkish petroleum concession.—A. and N.Z. cable.
