MAIL TRAIN DERAILED.
DELIBERATE ATTEMPTED OUT R AG E. Received March 10, 12.15 p.m. CAPETOWN, March 9. The. Johnnne-hiirg-Uape mail train was derailed Just night near Germa-lon, hut there* were no casualties-. The derailment was it deliberate act. caused by loosening ;i rail md stretching a chain across the line. The engine turned over. A number of railwaymen !e!t work under protest. They stale that jt is impossible to continue without additional protect ion The distribution of meat and bread has practically ceased, and the water supply is maintained hv tin* departmental officials. The sanitary services have been seriously interfered with. The natives engaged in the services arc afraid to continue work. Yesterday’s casualties wen* 16 killed and 40 wounded. The behaviour of the natives so far is declared to he exemplary. The I turban light infantry has been ordered lb mohilix*. A proclamation that has been issued states that the Government has information that: the deliberate and unprovoked attacks on the natives an* designed to stampede die coloured population and give the impression throughout the country that a native rising on the Rami is imminent. The Government assures tin* country that the collisions tire due to the natives trying- to defend themselves against aggressive and unlawful acts and promises protection to all concerned. The railway running staff has agreed to maintain a limited service, the management undertaking special protection pf the men ami their families. —A. ami N.Z. cable.
MOBILISING DEFENCE FORCE. WARNING TO COMMANDOES; Received March 10, 8 a.m. CABETOWN. March 0. The Government litis mobilised several units of the defence force at’Johannesburg, including artillery. The authorities have issued a warning that if the commandoes refuse to disperse after warning, aeroplane machine gunfire will he used. During the various attacks by the strikers on the natives four strikers, nine natives and one Indian were killed, while many were wounded.
