SINN FEINERS RELEASED.

G (jyEffNMENT’S ACTION ' ATTEMPT TO MVENT FURTHER bitterness. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received August 11, 11.5 a.m. LONDON, August 10. Lord Birkenhead, speaking in thp House of Lords, defended the releasing ol the members of the Dail Eireann. He said he believed that under the circumstances the Government had chosen the right course, If it had refused to enter into negotiations it would ha\e been- ■committed for. an indefinite period to continuance of tho military and police efforts, but on a far larger scale No military commander would be bold enough to say what time, ..resources, men and expenditure would be required to suppress the rebellion. This might still prove necessary; if so, we would be confronted with tho position that while such preparations were being made the world would have seen a, continuance of the butchery of the police and Crown forces, adding to tho long legacy of bitterness. The Government, therefore, would have done tho wrong and indefensible thing if it had not negotiated when Dail Eirann was prepared to negotiate.—A. and N.Z. cable.
